Greetings from North Texas! I am a K-6 Music teacher at a public charter school in Dallas, TX. This fall will begin my 9th year teaching in a public school, and my 7th on my current campus.
I started out as a Vocal Music Education major at Baylor University and was classically trained as a mezzo-soprano, but circumstances changed and I graduated from The University of Texas at Arlington in 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, and received my teaching certificate in 2014. I’m currently certified to teach Early Childhood through 6th grade and ESL. Occasionally I teach elementary level Robotics enrichment courses, and I’m currently the Student Council advisor.
My education career started in high school where my first job was as a custodian for a local daycare. During college, I met and married my sweetheart, Sean. We have two wonderful children, one of whom has special needs. When my children reached school age, I realized how much I loved working with children, and decided to become a teacher.
My experience as an advocate for my special needs child during countless ARD* meetings gives me insight to advocate for my students with unique needs as well. I enjoy looking for ways to accommodate students and help all of my students succeed in learning.
In my spare time, I enjoy working with fiber crafts such as knitting, crocheting, and spinning. I also enjoy beadwork and chainmail, and pretty much any interesting and unique craft. Some other activities I enjoy are singing in church and occasions such as weddings. My family and I are avid gamers, and can often be found playing games on Steam with each other as well as friends.
*ARD – Assessment, Review, and Dismissal committee. This is a group of people with a vested interest in the child’s education including teachers, parents, diagnosticians, and school administrators who determine what services and accommodations will most help a special needs student succeed in school by putting them on a “level playing field” with their peers.
